On March 30 several of us gathered at the Dogwood Lodge to help COP burn his business cards. What good are they if you’re not going back to work any more?! Unfortunately, none of us took time out from the festivities to take any pictures. Maybe COP will bring back a few from his retirement honeymoon adventure?
Cap’n Morgan and the Pirate Princess surprised him by renting an RV for the week. They loaded up the gang and some kayaks and were to head off to the coast to escape and try out RV life for a week. Might be better than tenting with the Scouts. Can’t wait to hear the reports!! We’re waiting….
🙂
Hi Adventure Family! ! RETIREMENT is great and naps anytime are the bomb! This trip report is written in “copism” hope it will make sense.
So as Infoman said above the RETIREMENT it started with a big Party at the Dogwood Lodge with family and friends. Morgan and I can’t say enough how great it was so many of the Adventure Family came to the party. We all had a blast and for those that spent the night breakfast was served the next morning in the Adventure Family style of great food and drink!
So on with the trip reports!
OH YEA this won’t come as a shock to most of you but each day before we headed out the GREER family would gather in a circle, left arm stretch out, and SCREAMING MAY THE ADVENTURE CONTINUE….WWWAAAAHHHHOOOO! ! !
Morgan, Cris, Jason, Kevin, Hub (the dog) and I spent Sunday packing the RV. We left town at 3:00 pm heading to the Outer Banks for a week of fun – – – IT WAS! !.
What a great time we had. Jason was driving, I was napping as we headed down the road, P.P. (Cris) was fixing snacks and Capn Morgan and Kevin where playing cards.
First stop was Beaufort. We stayed on Harkers Island at the same camp ground we stayed in last October when we had to wait a day to go to Shack.
We had a great three day in Beaufort visiting downtown, eating on the dock, and just being together and visiting sites in Beaufort. Jason fixed a BIG “low country boil” our last night on Harkers Island. What a meal the Adventure Family would love! !
Thursday we packed up and took the ferry from Cedar Island to Ocracoke. Do you know what you do in an RV during a 2.5 hour ferry ride? RIGHT NAP, SNACK AND HAVE FUN! ! ! On Ocracoke we did a few shops….lots of Black Beard stuff but I already have the best pirate hat in the world that Infoman and KLK got me. We checked out the Lighthouse at Ocracoke, I spent time walking the beach while the family went shopping.
Then we headed up Ocracoke Island to catch the next ferry (again naps, snacks etc) to Cape Hatteras checked out the Hatteras lighthouse, was very interesting to see the story about moving the lighthouse. We spent the night in Frisco. PP, Kevin and I went sea kayaking that afternoon for a couple of hours in Pamlico Sound which was like being on glass……….then the weather changed! ! The next morning it was 35 and enough snow to turn the grass white for a few. Needless to say we all had nothing but shorts and t-shirts. The local store did well on warm clothing for us and a lot of others there. WHAT IS WITH SNOW AT THE BEACH? ! ? ! The storm hit hard, winds of 35 mph with Pamlico Sound looking like a mad ocean. No more sea kayaking as planned.
We continued on North hopping the wind would not blow the RV over. We crossed the LLLLOOONNNNGGGGGG bridge at Oregon Inlet and found a National Park camp ground right on the beach at Oregon Inlet and across from the Bodie Island lighthouse. We went and visited the lighthouse, took several walks on the beach finding sea shells and having the beach all to ourselves. Back at the RV we fixed our last big dinner. Needless to say we had been eating well the Adventure Family would have been proud of us. I noticed around 3:00 am Capn Morgan was cold and as I put my face out it was a warm 39 in the RV ……the heat was not working. So I got up, put more covers on the frozen bodies and turned on the truck heater. After about 30 mins. the frozen bodies had thrown off the extra covers and the blue in the body was turning pink again. Crawled back in bed nice and warm and had to get up again at 6:00 am and do it all over again! Life in an RV…I wanted my O degree bag!
We packed up early and heading north again. We found a place in Nags Heads for a hot Adventure Family style breakfast that we all enjoyed. We visit Jockey’s Ridge and Kitty Hawk and then headed east on US 64 back to Greensboro.
We got back to GSO around 7:00 pm after enjoying a great family trip in an RV visiting all the places we did. Is there an RV in our future you ask? YES I would say there is! ! We are going to call it “THE PIRATE EXPRESS”…won’t it make a great base camp for trips!
Thanks again from Morgan and me to all of you that were a part of this new book in our life!!
COP AND Capn Morgan
p.s. Infoman there are no picture BUT that is another story about the ghost of Beaufort! !
Ok let me tell everyone the other parts of the story.
(in the following story cop, dad and pa are the same person)
yes we enjoyed our 8 days together. much more then I expected. as we started our trip we all said “no matter what happens in the end- remember we are a family who wanted to make it work, even if it doesn’t”
Dad started out the trip by bribing us to be nice with a mini shopping spree at gander mnt. brib work well! (Got some cool new paddling shoes and uv long sleeve shirt). kev got yet another pirate pistol to protect us from hostile take overs.
It wasn’t long into the drive that I learned my “wonderful” father has one bad habit (ok, we are only talking about one for the moment) he cuses alot. For all of you who have experinced a 6 year old. they know what a bad word is and have decided a few other are also. Kev quickly made himself the cuse police and started charging pa quarters. when dad hit $5, he decided he was paying kev $10 and would use the credit.
It amazed me how I can be 2 ft from kev and ask him to do something and him not hear me, but let pa mumble a cuse word 20 ft away and kev charged him a quarter.
as many of you know from adventuring with cop, he Snores. You know that after you live with someone for a long time you start to look alike? we’ll you might not always look alike, but you snore alike. Jas and I spent many of our late nights playing uno and listening to mom and dad snore. One night comes to mind when dad asked mom to roll over and stop (good thing kev was asleep or mom would have been putting in on the jar) , well let’s just say that didn’t go well and dad didn’t wake mom up again.
another side effect of growing old and retiring is it becomes fun to gross out your kids. Jas and I weren’t allowed to kiss, but mom and dad did often. everyone say it with me EEEEEEEEEEWWWWWWWW! and if another person tells me it should give me hope for when I retire- no it doesn’t, I was delivered by the stork and that’s all I need to know:)
Our trip ended witha wonderful scenic tour of Hobgood. You are all asking what’s Hobgood? Excatly a small hunting town where everybody knows your name. like Cheers with the beer, but more sweaty stinky, country boys. while kev and I have been forced to attend, i never though we would torment mom and dad that way. I guess it was jason’s pay back for having to watch them be mushy all week!
now you know.. the rest of the story….
all in all it was a wonderful trip, good company, good food, and good pirating!
Damn children should be seen and not heard! ! ! !
